Using your Admin account at home

Published by William Krauss under Windows

We start our computer and just go to town. You start out and check your e-mail. Then you check the student portal and see that you have all your homework and quizzes done. Then you start checking all your blogs and forums. We all do it. Then your computer starts acting up, but quick as you can you are too late. You have a virus. This kind of thing happens to a lot of people every day. This can also happen to a MCSA. When was the last time that you logged in as a user? When we log in as a user we can still do most administrative tasks with the Run As command.

So what does the run as command do for you? It can be your saving grace or a big pain, all depends on your point of view. I to like to just be able to click on whatever I want and not have it say that you do not have permission to accesses it, and at the same time I am still using my user account. When it comes down to it you have to weight you options. Surf the web with you administrative account or deal with the pain of having one more password to remember. When you are setting up your computer there is one thing that we all have to think about. What information do I have on my computer? What is this computer worth to me? Do I have a back up plain if something happens?

I am not saying that this will save your computer, it will slow down a hacker or a virus. If we just give them the keys to our computer. Why would we put up a fire wall? Why do we have antivirus programs? Just remember the prime directive. PROTECT THE DATA!
